Michael Anastassiades, 2024
OBJECT
Menhir is a designer coffee maker created by Cypriot designer Michael Anastassiades and produced by Alessi. Introduced at the 2024 Salone del Mobile, Menhir received overwhelmingly positive feedback from both critics and the public, positioning it well to become one of Alessi’s top bestsellers.
For this coffee maker, Anastassiades drew inspiration from the enigmatic forms of prehistoric Menhirs—tall stones arranged in circles or geometric compositions during ancient times for magical or religious rituals. To celebrate what many consider the last ritual of the contemporary age, Anastassiades looked to prehistoric rites, creating a fascinating parallel.
The Menhir coffee maker represents a synthesis of Anastassiades’ aesthetic exploration and the technical demands of a stainless steel object produced in the thousands. Its forms are sculptural and essential, while the reflective stainless steel surfaces follow pure geometric lines, evoking an ancient, almost primal form.
Anastassiades has succeeded in creating an object that confidently navigates the worlds of art and industry—an evocative, sculptural piece destined to enter the homes and daily lives of many people.
