Adolf Meyer was a German architect deeply involved in the Bauhaus movement, where he was also a professor of technical drawing and construction techniques.
Meyer was Walter Gropius’s right-hand man, planner, and executor of his designs, as well as a close confidant. As early as 1910, they collaborated to create the Fagus Factory, one of the most important modernist buildings of the time.
The experimental single-family home Haus am Horn was built for the first Bauhaus exhibition in the summer of 1923 in Weimar. The house was designed by Georg Muche and the Bauhaus architecture department. Adolf Meyer and Walter March were responsible for overseeing the construction.
The book on the project was written by Meyer and Moholy-Nagy in the summer of 1924 and became the third volume of the Bauhausbücher series. After an essay by Walter Gropius providing insights into the housing industry, Georg Muche presents the design of the model building. Adolf Meyer then describes its technical execution, providing details on the companies involved (publisher’s description).

Adolf Meyer (1881–1929) was a German modernist architect, a student of Behrens, and very close to Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius. The two were partners in running their architectural firm, and after the founding of the school, Gropius appointed him to teach technical subjects related to architecture. His work is collected by prestigious museums around the world, such as the MoMA in New York.
In A Bauhaus Experimental House, Meyer showcases his technical expertise in the field of architecture and brings the ideas of the experimental house built in 1923 to an executive level. He reminds us that the radical ideas and principles of the Bauhaus were also part of a practical reality made up of technical drawings, suppliers, and quality execution.”
The Bauhausbücher Series
The Bauhausbücher series was conceived in 1925 by Walter Gropius and László Moholy-Nagy, two of the most important figures within the Bauhaus. The series aimed to describe the Bauhaus world in relation to life and art. Of the more than 30 planned titles, only 14 were actually published, and they went down in history for their design, layout, and artistic significance. Here we present the English re-edition by the Swiss publisher Lars Müller Publishers, republished in 2019 to celebrate the Bauhaus 100 anniversary.
