The BOOK
Published in 1929, From Material to Architecture encapsulates the essence of László Moholy-Nagy’s pedagogical approach at the Bauhaus. This book, the final release in the renowned series of 14 volumes, focuses on the Bauhaus preliminary course, illustrating how students were encouraged to evolve in their daily practice.
The educational philosophy behind this method, summarized by the phrase ‘Jedermann ist begabt’ (everyone is talented), was a cornerstone of Bauhaus teaching methodologies from its founding in 1919 until its closure in 1933.
This work represents Moholy-Nagy’s second contribution to the series, following Painting, Photography, Film (volume 8), and continues his exploration of the interaction between art, science, and technology. His goal was to foster a more refined sensory perception in students, thus cultivating a close connection between artistic practice and technological and scientific advancements.
This approach reflects the broader mission of the Bauhaus: to integrate art into the fabric of society and everyday life, breaking down the barriers between traditional art forms and industrial techniques.
The Bauhausbücher Series
The Bauhausbücher series was conceived in 1925 by Walter Gropius and László Moholy-Nagy, two of the most important figures within the Weimar school. The series aimed to describe the world of the German Bauhaus in relation to life and art.
Of over 30 planned titles, only 14 were actually published, and they went down in history for their design, layout, and artistic significance. Here we present the stunning English re-edition by the Swiss publisher Lars Müller Publishers, republished in 2019 to mark the Bauhaus 100 celebrations.
