New Works from Bauhaus Workshops is the seventh book in the Bauhausbücher series and the second edited by Walter Gropius in the collection.

The Bauhaus, a fundamental movement in modern art and design, was based on the principle of uniting life, craftsmanship, and art, creating a holistic approach to creation and education.

Walter Gropius, the founder of the Bauhaus, elaborated on this philosophy in his writings, outlining the core principles that guided the institution’s pedagogy and practice.

At the heart of Bauhaus philosophy was the idea of a “Gesamtkunstwerk,” or total work of art, where all forms of art and design would harmoniously come together. Gropius believed that by integrating disciplines, the Bauhaus could bridge the gap between art and industry and bring its new aesthetic to everyday design objects.

The workshops in Weimar, which Gropius discusses in this book, were fertile ground for innovation and experimentation. These workshops covered a wide range of materials and disciplines, including furniture, metalwork, textiles, and ceramics. 

The goal was not only to teach technical skills but also to instill a deep understanding of materials and the importance of form, functionality, and simplicity in design.
