Frames, The Exhibition

The Tim Van Laere Gallery presents Frames, the first solo exhibition of Muller Van Severen at the gallery. Frames is a total installation, an immersive universe of form, color, light, reflections, and transparencies. Over 30 works are gathered in the monumental space of the Tim Van Laere Gallery, where the artist duo explores sculptural impact through minimal interventions.

In the works created for the exhibition, the duo always begins with a single sheet, from which openings and depths emerge through cutting and folding. These techniques not only create space for functions but also bridge the gap between reality and imagination. From a flat surface, a sculpture arises that moves between abstraction and figuration.

What immediately stands out is the emphasis on the possibilities of pure geometric forms, which seem to reference Malevich’s installation The Last Futurist Exhibition of Paintings 0,10 from 1915.

However, Muller Van Severen doesn’t just aim to demonstrate an essential use of form and color; the duo also wants these forms to become an integral part of our daily lives, inviting us to use and live with their sculptures.

In this approach, they draw on the principles introduced into the art world by Franz West, who always emphasized the participatory value of a work of art. It was also Franz West who caused a radical revolution by declaring furniture as art.

While for Franz West, furniture was “adaptive for the resting body,” Muller Van Severen seeks ways in which furniture and objects can shape our lives and explore their impact on both the space that hosts them and the people who use them.

Muller Van Severen

Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen began their artistic collaboration as Muller Van Severen in the spring of 2011. Their work focuses on creating objects with a distinctive sculptural quality, explicitly involving the surrounding space and its dynamics in the creative process. The result of this dialogue between form, space, and usability is reflected in various collections that reinterpret how we interact with our environment.

The artist duo has won numerous awards, and their works are collected by major museums and design institutions. In addition to their institutional activities, the duo designs furniture and objects for several international companies (Zanotta, HAY, and Valerie_Objects, to name a few), which have had a significant impact on the aesthetics and atmospheres of contemporary design.
