As suggested by its name, the E-1027 table was designed by Eileen Gray as a furnishing for her most famous architectural project, the Villa E-1027 in Cap Martin on the French Riviera. The villa is considered Gray’s total work of art, embodying pure and elegant modernist architecture, a masterpiece that famously sparked the envy of Le Corbusier.
Gray designed the villa as a seaside home to share with her lover Jean Badovici, an architecture critic. She carefully considered how to live in her maison en bord de mer, starting with the choice of its wild and pure location. Gray, an independent and nonconformist artist, persisted until every last piece of furniture was selected and crafted.
From this comprehensive creative endeavor emerged the E-1027 table, distinguished by its essential construction in tubular metal and glass, and the formal elegance typical of Gray. In period photos, the famous table is seen in rooms furnished with the Bibendum armchair, the Transat, and the iconic Tube Light, as well as Gray’s hand-woven rugs from her Parisian workshops.
The combination of elements reveals a strong harmony, great balance, and is incredibly elegant in its simplicity.
