Bowl and Strainer Sori Yanagi

The Sori Yanagi Bowl and Strainer have made design history, not only as part of the Japanese master’s collection, which perfectly marries industrial design with Japanese sensitivity and refined technique, but also for being featured in the 2007 “Super Normal” exhibition organized by Naoto Fukasawa and Jasper Morrison in Japan and in London.

This set reimagines and perfects a traditional idea, resulting in an elegant and timeless design. The strainer fits seamlessly into the bowl, with the two edges slightly overlapping, allowing for easy lifting and draining of water from fruits, vegetables, or any other ingredients.

Legend has it that when Yanagi visited the “Super Normal” exhibition by Fukasawa and Morrison, he took great interest in the displayed objects, commenting and complimenting their choice and functionality. Upon seeing the Bowl and Strainer set, he admiringly asked, “Who designed these?” 

According to Morrison and Fukasawa, who recount the episode in their book Super Normal, this moment exemplifies Yanagi’s philosophy of “design without designer,” where his work becomes so natural that it blends seamlessly into the world of objects.
