OBJECT

The Crate Chair is the result of a collaboration between Rietveld Originals and Hay. This chair is one of the pieces in the Crate collection, which also includes chairs, side tables, and cushions in various models. Winner of the Monocle Design Awards 2023, the Crate line demonstrates that simplicity, elegance, and durability are the foundation of any quality object.

The collection is based on a 1934 design by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld. The renowned Dutch designer and architect, known for the Red and Blue Chair, the Steltman Chair, and many other iconic pieces in the history of interior design, created the Crate Lounge Chair using leftover materials from pallets in his workshop.

The elegance and proportion of the lines did the rest, resulting in an object that is intriguing, contemporary, and still relevant today.

In the line created in collaboration with Hay in 2023, chairs, tables, and armchairs are designed to perfectly suit both indoor and outdoor settings.

Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964) was a designer and architect from Utrecht, a key figure in neoplasticism and the De Stijl movement. In addition to the UNESCO-listed Rietveld Schröder House and numerous architectural projects, Rietveld designed furniture throughout his career. His Red and Blue Chair is a symbol of 20th-century modernist design.
