Il Conico is a stainless steel kettle designed by Aldo Rossi for Alessi in 1986. Nearly forty years later, Il Conico remains a classic of Italian design, continuing to be produced by Alessi with great critical and commercial success.
As suggested by the name, Il Conico is a continuation of a project that began with the La Conica coffee maker, sharing the analogy between the name and the shape. Aldo Rossi describes these two projects in terms of brevitas, a concept that describes both the name and the pure form (the cone) that characterizes the kettle. Over the years, both objects have garnered great public interest, as people recognize the power of a shape that is both primitive and futuristic.
ALDO ROSSI AND THE COLLABORATION WITH ALESSI
Aldo Rossi is considered by critics to be the greatest Italian architect of the last century. His architectural projects, drawings, and writings—both poetic and intelligent—earned him the Pritzker Prize in 1990. In addition to his significant contributions to architecture, Aldo Rossi also collaborated for many years in the production of kitchen objects, especially coffee makers and kettles, for Alessi.
It all began in the late 1970s when Alessandro Mendini invited Rossi and 10 other architects of the time to participate in the experimental project Tea and Coffee Piazza. This was a pivotal moment for Alessi, leading to continued collaboration with Rossi and the creation of some of the most important design objects in Alessi’s production, including the La Conica coffee maker, the Il Conico kettle, as well as the La Cupola coffee maker, Ottagono, and related stainless steel tea and coffee sets.
Il Conico In Museums
The Il Conico stainless steel kettle, along with other kitchen objects created by Aldo Rossi, has had a significant cultural impact. In addition to still being in production (most of them), these items are also collected by some of the world’s finest design museums.
Among these prestigious institutions are the V&A in London and the Cooper Hewitt in New York, to name a few.
