The Kink Vase is one of the most interesting and successful vases in contemporary design. Produced by the Scandinavian brand Muuto and designed by American designer Rachel Griffin, aka Earnest Studio, based in Rotterdam, this vase embodies a thoroughly contemporary aesthetic.
The name “kink” refers to an unexpected and decisive curve, which perfectly describes the vase’s defining feature. Starting from a very simple form, like a cylinder or tube, it transforms into a vase with two openings and a unique, almost humanoid character.
The aesthetic of Kink, which went into production in 2019, combines industrial elements like the tube and industrial ceramic, transformed by Rachel Griffin’s sensibility into familiar, ironic, light, and joyful forms.
The Design of Kink Vase
In designing the Kink Vase, Earnest Studio aimed to experiment with manipulating simple shapes using digital tools combined with the use of ceramics, one of the oldest materials for producing vases and household items.
The result, with its double opening, is a reinterpretation of an archetype (and perhaps the creation of a new one) in a form with two mouths that invites exploration of new floral compositions.
Additionally, the Kink Vase is glazed only on the inside, creating a pleasant and elegant tactile sensation, and a contrast that enhances its sculptural and playful character.
In the designer’s own words: My starting point for the Kink Vase was an exploration of how new forms could be created through the digital manipulation of simple shapes. The design combines this appreciation of modern technology with traditional ceramic craft, resulting in a piece that is both contemporary and sculptural. The graphic and playful appearance of the Kink Vase—combined with its double opening, which suggests a new way to arrange flowers—infuses its surroundings with joy.
