Milk Bottle Lamp

Droog Design is a Dutch collective founded in 1993 by Renny Ramakers and Gijs Bakker, the former an art critic and the latter a designer—both Dutch. The collective brings together the work of many different designers, predominantly from Northern Europe, all united by a common reflection on objects and their production.

Droog’s micro-productions favor objects that lightly reflect on the relationship with things and the use of materials, often with a dose of conceptualism and irony. Droog’s objects often give the impression of having passed through the hands of Duchamp or the avant-garde—assemblage and found objects are common at Droog, which frequently uses scrap materials or repurposes and assembles objects with a different previous function.

This is how Tejo Remy’s Milk Bottle Lamp was born, as well as his famous Chest of Drawers and Rag Chair. These objects, along with works by other great designers such as Hella Jongerius, Marcel Wanders, and Jurgen Bey, created a true shockwave in the design world of the 90s—an energy that brought new life to Dutch design, establishing it as an innovative force in European design.
