MARIO TRIMARCHI, 2014
Object
The Ossidiana coffee maker is a design by Italian designer Mario Trimarchi for Alessi, achieving great critical and commercial success and winning the Compasso d’Oro in 2016 along with numerous other awards.
Since 2014, the year Ossidiana went into production, this elegant coffee maker has established itself as a new classic of Italian design thanks to its sculptural design inspired by volcanic stone, evoking ancient memories.
Mario Trimarchi himself describes his coffee maker: Lately I have been particularly interested in sculpture, the kind that removes material from a solid block, revealing its hidden forms. I worked on a cylindrical volume, removing one by one the superfluous reflections of the aluminum, to create a sculptural coffee maker design capable of guiding the hands during closure.
Between Design and Sculpture
The design for this splendid coffee maker was born in the liminal space between design and sculpture. Trimarchi’s sculptural process is inspired by the ancestral technique of chipping tools with simple stones. Starting from a solid cylinder, Trimarchi sculpted his coffee maker by decisively removing and carving. His focus was on evoking an ancient sensation, of sculptures we have already experienced, while also highlighting the qualities of volcanic stone typical of his homeland.
Trimarchi’s design is not only aesthetic, sculptural, and evocative. The beautiful Ossidiana coffee maker is also ergonomic, with a shape that fits the hands perfectly, making it easy to open and close. The design also includes a small knob on the lid, allowing the coffee maker to be operated with just one hand.
Ossidiana Coffee Maker: Prizes and Recognition
As mentioned earlier, this coffee maker has had a significant impact in the design world. Its sculptural nature combined with ergonomic attention has won the favor of both critics and the public. It is no surprise, then, that Ossidiana has received important accolades, such as the 2016 Compasso d’Oro, as previously mentioned, as well as the 2015 Red Dot Design Award and others.
