The Peel lamp, shortlisted for the 2024 Dezeen Awards, is designed by Dutch-Danish designer Sissel Gram Warringa for the lighting brand Frandsen.
Part of a series that includes a pendant, table, and wall lamp, Peel aims to redefine the perception of metal by introducing a soft, organic aesthetic. The series blends the structural rigidity of metal with fluid forms, adding an extra layer of meaning to a material that is traditionally percieved as cold or stern.
Project and Materials
The Peel table lamp is crafted from a single sheet of brushed stainless steel, cut into a precise circular shape with a slit.
The metal folds fluidly around the opal glass light source, ensuring soft, glare-free illumination. The Peel lamp series is the result of the designer’s exploration of metal’s flexibility and its ability to take on a softer appearance.
Starting with an experimental process of paper folding, Warringa developed a design that transforms a circular shape into a sculptural object. The elegant bending of steel creates both the structure and the lampshade, optimizing material use and ensuring sustainability.
The opal glass diffuser provides an even distribution of light while preserving the purity of the design. Each lamp in the series features a transparent PVC cord, and the use of a standard G9 light source enhances accessibility and sustainability by reducing electronic waste.
Awards
Although a recent addition to the Frandsen collection, the Peel series has already gained attention for its innovative approach to metalwork. The collection aligns with contemporary trends that emphasize material efficiency, sculptural aesthetics, and sustainable production.
The design has been nominated for the 2024 Dezeen Awards in the lighting category.
