OBJECT
The small L25 table lamp is one of Rietveld’s lesser known design objects. In 1925, the beloved Dutch designer and architect Gerrit Rietveld created this table lamp with its rigorous geometric shapes. Surprisingly modern for its time, it had never been mass-produced until 2019.
It has since become one of the most valuable pieces in the collection of the German company Tecta, which, after consulting Rietveld’s heirs, decided to start serial production using the exact dimensions of the original design as the model. The result is a highly sculptural object, surprisingly contemporary, and at the same time a small manifesto of the neoplastic movement.
The lamp is available in the original colors chosen by Rietveld—steel and black with small accents of red and blue—primary colors loved by the Dutch designer.
There is also a limited edition where the colors have been reinterpreted by Studio für Gestaltung in Neon Green, Ultramarine, and Neo Orange.
Rediscovering Rietveld's Objects and Furniture
Despite the great success of the Red and Blue Chair, one of the giants in design history, Gerrit Rietveld’s international fame often does not fully acknowledge his production of lamps and smaller objects.
His lamps, such as the L40 Pendant Lamp, which he designed in 1922 for a medical office, are now true classics in design history.
Interestingly, many other Rietveld pieces have remained unrealized projects, but are beginning to resurface over time. Besides the L25 Lamp produced by Tecta, an example is the Crate Chair, which in 2023 reignited public interest in Rietveld’s furniture thanks to a successful collaboration between Rietveld Originals and Hay.
GERRIT RIETVELD
Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964) was a designer and architect from Utrecht, a key figure in neoplasticism and the De Stijl movement. In addition to the UNESCO-listed Rietveld Schröder House and numerous architectural projects, Rietveld designed furniture throughout his career. His Red and Blue Chair is a symbol of 20th-century modernist design.
