The Tabouret Méribel stool was designed by French designer Charlotte Perriand in 1953 and was first presented alongside the Tabouret Berger at the Synthèse des arts exhibition in Tokyo in 1955.
It is a timeless classic that highlights robust shapes and proportions, emphasizing the expressiveness of wood in all its finishes. A lover of the mountains, architecture, and alpine furniture, Perriand designed both stools for her mountain cabin. The stools can be used as a pair, either as seating or as small tables.
The names of the stools reflect their original function, as this type of stool was used by shepherds for milking cows and goats. It’s no coincidence that these pieces stand out for their honest, simple shapes and the tangible quality of the material—the solid wood provides a sense of gentle solidity and softness, and its grain creates organic patterns that make each stool unique. These small masterpieces can be used individually or in highly original compositions.
In recent years, thanks to the re-examination and celebration of Perriand’s work, as well as the reissue of many historical pieces by Cassina, the Tabouret Méribel has experienced a significant surge in popularity and sales.
CHARLOTTE PERRIAND
Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) was a brilliant and revolutionary French designer. Alongside Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, she created a series of tubular steel furniture that has become legendary. Today, it is believed that these pieces were almost entirely designed by the young Perriand, including the famous Chaise Longue and Fauteuil Grand Confort. The LC series and other iconic pieces of her furniture are now produced by Cassina as part of the “I Maestri” collection.
