CONSTANCE GUISSET, 2010

Object
Designed by Constance Guisset and produced by Petite Friture, the Vertigo pendant lamp is a recent example of an instant classic with enjoyed a huge success since its launch.
The Vertigo pendant lamp is a wholly French product. Over the past two decades, France has heavily invested in the design sector, developing a strong identity and significant strength in the product design industry thanks to institutional commitment and investment.
Vertigo is an ingenious and aesthetic product, conceived in 2005 as a school project by the young Constance Guisset. Despite the success of the prototype, it was challenging for the designer to find a producer willing to bring it to market. This was until the celebrated meeting with Amelie du Passage of Petite Friture.
Over the past fifteen years, the duo has enjoyed immense success, particularly with the Vertigo lamp, but also other projects, becoming an institution in the contemporary design world.
The Production of the Vertigo Lamp
Vertigo is an unmistakable lamp: light, airy, large, and playful, creating a unique visual effect. Its structure appears to float and moves with grace and ease. When lit, it casts a play of shadows on the walls and ceiling, creating a warm, joyful, and elegant atmosphere.
The principles of lightness and movement, which are the foundation of Vertigo’s design, are achieved through a fiberglass structure kept in tension by polyurethane ribbons. The lamp also has the advantage of being easily transportable, thanks to its flexible structure and lightweight ribbons. As seen in the video above, the entire lamp, which can extend up to 2 meters in the large version, can be easily transported in a box, greatly saving energy and reducing environmental impact.
In addition to the packaging, the lamp’s production is carried out with commitment and awareness. Vertigo is produced by the Parisian association APF France handicap, which creates employment for women with disabilities and produces 100% of the Vertigo lamps.
Vertigo's Cultural Impact
As previously mentioned, Vertigo is the product that brought success to the design publisher Petite Friture and designer Constance Guisset. About 15 years after its launch, the lamp has become an icon of French design excellence, sold in thousands of units worldwide.
Vertigo has also entered the collections of prestigious museums and institutions, including the MAD in Paris and CNAP.
