Goto

Marie Brandolini, 1994

OBJECT

Born in France, raised in an aristocratic environment and trained as an artist, Marie Brandolini began living in Venice in the late 1980s.

Once she arrived in the lagoon, she was struck by an object that was almost unknown outside the island: the goto da fornasa, the glass used by Murano master glassmakers, made at the end of the day from leftover glass. The goto, created from production scraps, was not intended for sale but served as a drinking glass in the furnace.

With her eye for art and contemporary design, Marie Brandolini transformed the goto into a sought-after object, able to represent Murano’s heritage and at the same time a new idea of everyday luxury. Her reinterpretation turned the glass into not only a symbol of Murano’s long glassmaking tradition, but also a style icon balanced between past and present.

Laguna~B'S GOTO, PROJECT AND DESIGN

The Goto, as reimagined by Marie Brandolini and produced by her company Laguna~B, is a well known and easily recognisable object of design. It preserves the essence of the goto da fornasa, while its forms and colors reflect Brandolini’s sensibility.

Marie Brandolini shaped the design of her Goto with carefully chosen color palettes and defined forms. She worked with canne and murrine, traditional Murano features, to create abstract patterns and glasses that have a contemporary aesthetic. Though each piece follows Brandolini’s design, every Goto remains slightly different, as it is still crafted by hand by Murano glassmakers.

Since 2017, Laguna~B has been under the leadership of Marcantonio Brandolini d’Adda, Marie’s son. He has continued the production of the Goto, while introducing new collections and projects that explore glass in contemporary ways, preserving the company’s connection to Murano’s heritage.

LAGUNA~B, GLASSWARE AND CULTURAL PROJECTS

Laguna~B offers several collections that bring a contemporary perspective to Murano glass, conceived by Marie Brandolini and expanded into new colorways by Marcantonio. Among its most recognized lines are the Berlingot, striped tumblers inspired by the designer’s childhood candies, along with Fantasia, Dune and Filigrana.

Beyond glassware, Laguna~B pursues cultural and educational initiatives. These include Vital, a project focused on restoring the barene of the Venetian lagoon, and Autonoma Next, a residency program that introduces young people to Murano’s glassmaking tradition.
