Terra Light

Lauren Van Driessche, 2018

Object

Lauren Van Driessche’s Terra lamp is a sculptural light made of clay. A swiveling spherical diffuser rests on a cylindrical base, minimal in form and warm in material, designed to create an intimate and flexible atmosphere.

Refined and understated, Terra Light began as a personal need—the search for the right lamp to suit her own home. When no existing designs felt quite right, Van Driessche decided to make one herself, creating a piece that brings together visual sensitivity and everyday function.

Made entirely of terracotta, the lamp is composed of a cylindrical base and an adjustable sphere that can be tilted freely to direct the light.

The interior is glazed in white to softly reflect the light, while the unglazed exterior highlights the warm, porous texture of raw clay.

Each lamp is crafted by hand, with subtle irregularities that speak to its artisanal origins. First created in 2016 as a gift for her partner, an architect, Terra Light grew from an intimate gesture into a design piece. It’s a quiet balance of formal simplicity, careful detailing, and the warmth of home.

Awards

The journey of Terra Light gained momentum at the end of 2016, when Lauren Van Driessche took part in the “Win Your Own Design” competition organized by Serax and the Belgian magazine Knack Weekend.

Her terracotta lamp prototype caught the jury’s attention for its balance of pared-back form and thoughtful materiality. Serax chose to put it into production, turning a one-off piece into a collection for the market. The recognition marked a turning point in Van Driessche’s career, opening the door to the international design scene.

DESIGNER

Lauren Van Driessche is a Belgian designer born in the 1990s, with a background in interior architecture and a strong inclination for hands-on work. During her studies, she discovered ceramics as the perfect medium for exploring more fluid, sculptural forms, freed from the constraints of architecture.

Her approach blends formal simplicity with material honesty and a playful touch, often revealed in imperfect details or uneven finishes. The turning point came in 2016, when Serax decided to produce her terracotta lamp, Terra Light. Today, Van Driessche continues to explore the balance between function and poetry, creating objects that sit somewhere between art and design.
